VSCA Board of Directors Election

January 24–31, 2016

The annual election for the VSCA Board of Directors will be conducted online from Sunday, January 24 through Sunday, January 31 (this is later than the previously announced dates).

You are eligible to vote in the election if you are the parent or guardian of a scholastic player who has participated in at least one VSCA tournament in the past year, or an individual age 16 or older who has done significant volunteer work for the VSCA, such as assisting with directing or organizing tournaments, or serving as an Officer or Director, in the past year.

We are now accepting nominations and volunteers for all nine Board of Directors positions. All VSCA voting members age 18 or older are eligible to run for a Board of Directors position. Directors are elected for one-year terms, but may run for re-election. If you would like to place your name on the ballot, please email news@vschess.org by Wednesday, January 20 (this deadline is later than the previously announced date), and provide your name and a brief statement (150 words or less, plus an optional picture) for our website. Your statement should tell voters a little about yourself and why you are interested in serving as a Director. You may nominate someone else, with his/her permission, but we will also need a statement directly from the candidate. The candidate statements, along with instructions for voting, will be posted on our website by Sunday, January 24.

The VSCA is a non-profit corporation with nine Directors who are elected or re-elected for one-year terms by the voting members. The election of Directors traditionally has been held at a membership meeting during a winter tournament in the Richmond area, as specified in our corporate by-laws. Although the VSCA began in Richmond, the footprint of our organization now spans the area from Charlottesville to Virginia Beach. Therefore, in order to give all of our members a fair chance to vote, the Board of Directors recently voted to amend the by-laws to allow online elections, rather than requiring members to attend a specific tournament.

We will still hold annual face-to-face membership meetings to allow members to discuss issues and provide feedback. The meetings will now be alternated from year to year between Central Virginia and Hampton Roads. This winter's membership meeting will be held at the Kemps Landing/Old Donation tournament in Virginia Beach on January 16 at 11:30 am.
